Italy, 1944. As the war takes its toll on Allied forces in Europe, a squadron of black pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen are finally given the chance to prove themselves in the sky - even as they battle discrimination on the ground. It's a tribute to the unsung heroes who rose above extraordinary challenges and ultimately soared into history.

Red Tails is a two-hour skim through the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first squadron of black American pilots to fly in WWII. As inspirational stories go, it's up there with, well, most based-on-truth inspirational stories. The achievements of the squadron, known as the Red Tails (all will be revealed in the film if you don't already know), are remarkable bearing in mind the terrible prejudice they suffered at the hands of their superiors and the very countrymen they were defending, not least of all with the broken, rattling, dying hunks of metal they were forced to fly.
In 1925, the US Army War College published a study in which it stated, Blacks are mentally inferior, by nature subservient, and cowards in the face of danger. They are therefore unfit for combat. How's that for backing? When that text fills the screen at the start of the film, one is left wondering Why did they bother? Fortunately, they were more interested in doing what was right than exacting revenge or becoming bitter. It is a superb story of good overcoming evil and the uplifting conclusion is no surprise to anyone living in the 21st century.
But does a fantastic story of triumph over persecution make for a perfect film? It did with Schindler's List but, alas, this is not that film.
